| A District Foundation Beginnings |

Having a foundation dedicated to providing support for unusual and educational initiatives is becoming more and more popular among school districts today. Other school administrators share my concerns of trying to stretch limited local funding resources to fit an expanding array of innovative programs and technologies. Approximately six years ago our leadership team started exploring alternative sources of funding. Knowing the Derry Area has always had a tradition of producing exemplary scholars, business men and women, and successful leaders who genuinely care about their hometown, the Derry Area School District Foundation was initiated. As always, support from friends of Derry Area School District has surpassed every expectation. One of our commendable initiatives, the Early Literacy Center, is dedicated to honoring the memory of the fine lady whose image graces this page. Please read the wonderful tribute to our colleague Barbara L. Thompson by Linda Werner, retired Derry Area High School English Department Chair. The Foundation Board of Directors and the entire Derry Area School District join me in honoring the life and legacy of Barb Thompson.
The foundation's second initiative is the construction of an Amphitheater and Art Gallery on the school's campus between the one room school house and soccer field. It is scheduled to be completed in September 2009. This facility will enhance the already strong tradition of the arts and cultural within the school district and community. The foundation is extremely excited to open the doors to this cultural center in Derry.
We invite alumni and other interested supporters of local education to become actively involved in supporting our dreams. This Web site will help bring you up-to-date on some of the unusual and highly innovative projects the foundation is currently helping to implement. I cordially ask for your comments, suggestions, and ideas.
