The Derry Area School District Foundation sponsored a concert with the music of “Patsy Cline and Friends” at 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, to benefit the future site of the Derry Area School District Amphitheater/Art Center. The audience enjoyed an excellent evening with the music of Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, and Loretta Lynn as performed by Cathi Rhodes, Eric Harris, and Kasey Zemba. Snacks were also available. The concert was held in the Derry Area Middle School Auditorium, with hopes that a future Sunday concert series will begin at the new outdoor Amphitheater being built on the campus.

The future site of the amphitheater/art center is located off Route 982 on Recreation Road between the soccer field and the one-room school house on the Derry Area School District campus (turn at Grandview Elementary School sign). The new structure is scheduled to arrive on or about August 19 and a groundbreaking is scheduled for August 20 at 2:00 p.m.

Senior Legacy Painting
{legacy_02}

Each year, for the last few years, the Visual Arts Department at Derry Area High School has asked its soon-to-be graduating seniors to participate in a Legacy Painting project. Students are asked to submit ideas for a large-scale canvas (or digital painting) that could be hung in the high school or art room to help inspire and motivate incoming students. The only other criteria are that the painting be school appropriate and that it is an original work that is entirely student created.

Over the years students have worked together and / or individually to submit ideas for the project for approval and the best one receives a large canvas and paint, or other supplies, to make it happen. Other than a few words of encouragement and some helpful tips, it’s up to the students to volunteer their time to complete the project before leaving their high school experience behind them. As of now, there are five of these paintings.

This year the Senior Legacy Painting was created by Dominick Disciascio, who was also the district’s Visual Arts winner of the Judges McCormick and Pezze Artistic Merit Award for 2009. Sponsored by the Greensburg Area Cultural Council and the Westmoreland Cultural Trust, the Artistic Merit awards are given to talented seniors in theater, art and music at several local high schools.

Visual Arts Dept. at Commencement
{Grad_combo_01}
This year there was a new addition to Derry Area High School’s Commencement ceremony. Thanks to the efforts from the Graduation Committee, and with a little help from the Visual Arts Department, a new banner for the stage was added to this year’s proceedings. The traditional emblem was re-created with a new hardwood baseboard and fresh paint, along with a few coats of clear UV protection, to bring an updated look to help give the graduating seniors an inspiring send off for many years to come.

Even Zombies Know School Arts are Cool!
{Open_Studio_01}

Recently, during an “Open Art Studio” session in the art room at Derry Area High School, zombies were spotted studying core learning concepts disguised as Hollywood special effects! When high school junior Jesse Walk learned that his art teacher, Mr. McWherter’s student teacher James Mowry, had a background doing special effects make-up, he asked for help to create a creature for a Photo / Graphics I class assignment. Jesse was working on a class project and a zombie was exactly what he was looking for. Mr. Mowry, who is doing his student teaching in art through the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, agreed and brought in his “kit,” which included enough fake blood and mortician’s wax to make a very convincing “victim.”

Mr. Mowry was happy to help out and explained that he often carries his special effects kit with him when he volunteers to participate in Revolutionary War reenactments, or when he creates “ghoulish” characters for Pittsburgh’s Fright Night” Halloween events.

It may sound unusual to some, but as anyone familiar with our district’s art program knows, we are always open to student requests to learn more about all areas in the arts. And this includes special effects make-up, which is now part of the degree programs offered by many post-secondary schools for students interested in the entertainment arts. This is one of the areas of the arts that continues even in adverse financial times and is seen by some as a potential way to help rebuild our local economy (Pittsburgh Business Times).

TheOpen Art Studioprogram is our after-school opportunity for art students to challenge themselves further artistically, for tutoring those who need additional support, or for any student who might be interested in stopping in to learn more about the art programs at the high school.

2009 CinemArt & K-5 Art Show

{cinemart_02}

District elementary art instructors Brian Sabo and Sarah Mikeska recently hosted the third annual CinemArt and K-5 Art Show at Grandview Elementary School. This year there were over 300 parents and children participating. The PTO helps sponsor the event where students are invited to bring their family to school for a group art project that includes an art show and book fair, with pizza and a movie.

Last year they did a mural of the US that is mounted in one of the hallways of the building and spans 12' across. It was decided this year to make the art project a “log cabin” made of carpet tubes that would remain at Grandview to be permanently displayed. Ken Hackman from the high school helped Brian Sabo design and build the cabin and put it together on the stage in the school.

As families checked in they were handed a popular children's story and one of the ''logs'' from the cabin. They were given one hour to retell the story on the cardboard tube using pictures and/ or words. When finished they handed their ''log'' back in at the stage. The cabin was re-assembled with the adorned logs to a rousing applause from the families who participated. The finished cabin will be put into storage until the summer when it will be permanently put together in the Grandview Library.

High school music students chosen to compete.

{choir_012509}

The Derry Area High School Music Department is proud to announce the accomplishments of Esther Hull and Ben Richards who were chosen to participate in the 2009 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 1 Chorus Festival at South Fayette High School. Through competitive auditions held at the festival, Esther was chosen to progress to the Region I Chorus Festival to be held at Derry Area High School next month.

One hundred and fifty students have been chosen for the Region I Choir by combining the best voices from the PMEA District 1 and District 5 Choruses. The top students from the Region Chorus Festival will combine with students from across the commonwealth to culminate in the 2009 All-State Chorus in Valley Forge, PA in late April.

The Region I Choir consists of students from Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Lawrence, Mercer, Washington and Westmoreland counties and will be performing in concert Friday, February 20 at 7:30 in the evening. The festival will be conducted by Frank Gallo, a young man who was himself a part of the PMEA system and a graduate of the Monessen High School located in PMEA District 1.
